Transitioning to natural hair can be a challenge — check out some tips on how to do it in our last blog post. Any time you change up your hair style, it’s a good idea to try out a couple new products to see if they’ll better suit your styling needs.

This is especially true when you decide to go natural! It can be tempting to just return to your old style, but our hair stylists are here to help! Stick with it, once the transition period is over, you’ll have a head full of gorgeous curls that you’ll learn to style in whatever way fits your personality!

Cleansing Products

When styling natural hair, the key is to make sure that you’re not over shampooing. You want to keep as much moisture as possible and shampooing your hair too often will strip away the natural oils. As such, look for cleansing products that are also hydrating, like the following:

  • Cleansing conditioner
  • Cider vinegar rinse
  • Paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo

Conditioning Products

A big part of going natural is finding the right moisture balance for your hair and for the season. Giving your hair the right amount of moisture can be the difference between smooth, bouncy curls and floppy, frizzy hair. Here in Birmingham, the weather doesn’t get too cold and we have a good deal of moisture in the air. One of the biggest challenges in our climate is making sure curls don’t get too puffy.

Here are a few conditioning products you should have on hand

  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Detangler
  • Smoothing gel
  • Argan oil

Styling Products

As with everything, what works for one person may not work with another. If you have a particular style you’re looking to achieve, talk with one of our hair stylists about it! We’re more than happy to teach you tips and tricks in our hair salon. After all, some people are looking to wash and go while others want to apply heat or opt for weaves and wigs.

Here are a few essential products we suggest you have in your bathroom cabinet:

  • Thermal protection hairspray
  • A curl balm or texturizer to hold your curls while eliminating frizz
  • Dry oil mist
  • Blow dryer comb
